How to Prevent and Treat Common Summer Ailments From Bug Bites to Poison Ivy

How to Prevent and Treat Common Summer Ailments From Bug Bites to Poison Ivy

As the temps get toasty and you start spending more time outside, the medical team at First Response Urgent Care, with two offices in Brooklyn, New York, wants you to make the most of this wonderful season by avoiding common summertime pitfalls.

Here are some tips to help keep you and your family ailment-free this summer.

Protecting your skin from insects

Mosquitoes and ticks can carry diseases that require medical attention. Whenever spending time in parks or wooded areas, use an insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin. Wearing long sleeves and tucking pants into socks can also provide a physical barrier. If you find a tick attached to your skin, remove it carefully with tweezers and monitor the area for a rash.

Identifying and managing poison ivy

Poison ivy is common throughout Brooklyn and New York City, particularly in parks and wooded areas such as Floyd Bennett Field and Prospect Park. Poison ivy causes an itchy, blistering rash in most people. The best way to prevent a reaction is to learn what these plants look like and avoid contact with them. If you think you’ve touched one, wash your skin and clothing immediately with soap and water.

For mild rashes, over-the-counter calamine lotion or hydrocortisone can reduce itching. You can also use cool compresses to provide temporary relief. If the rash spreads to your face or causes significant swelling, visit our specialists for treatment.

Practicing effective sun safety

Sunburns can cause long-term skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer. We advise applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day, even when it is cloudy. You should reapply every two hours or more often if you are swimming or sweating. Seek shade during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Even one blistering sunburn in childhood can significantly increase the risk of melanoma later in life. If you experience a severe burn with fever or chills, our experts can provide professional care.

Staying hydrated in the heat

High temperatures and humidity in Brooklyn can lead to dehydration and heat exhaustion. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty. If you are active outdoors, you may need beverages that replace lost electrolytes. Signs of dehydration include dark urine, dizziness, and extreme fatigue. Older adults and children are at an increased risk of heat-related illnesses. If you or a loved one feels faint or stops sweating despite the heat, seek medical help immediately.

Knowing when a summer ailment is serious

Seek help if you experience a high fever, difficulty breathing, or a rash that resembles a bull's-eye. These can be signs of a more serious allergic reaction or a tick-borne illness like Lyme disease.

Our experts at First Response Urgent Care frequently see these issues in the warmer months and can provide the necessary testing and prescriptions.
